Starting Up is Easy.

Huntington Beach is comprised of thousands of successful businesses in a variety of industries. From tourism and restaurants, to auto dealerships, media, retail, manufacturing and professional services, the City continues to attract businesses who enjoy all that locating in our community has to offer.  We'd like to welcome your business, too. The information below is a general outline of what you will need to get started, and we are happy to help direct to you other resources as needed.

Some basic steps:

Step 1:  Find the perfect Huntington Beach location
View properties for sale or lease, as well as exciting maps and demographic reports that aid in your decision making via our Surf City Locator, which is connected to the commercial MLS with real-time listings.  You will also find a link to Surf City Locator on every page of our website.

Step 2: Review planning, zoning and parking requirements
Before signing a lease, it is important to know whether your preferred location can accommodate your business.  Our Community Development Department is open Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5 PM (closed 12-1 PM) and is happy to work with you on a walk-in basis, or by phone or appointment to discuss any planning and building concerns and help define the various applications and entitlements that may be needed for your business type and location.

Step 3: Eliminate surprise costs with a Building Code Compliance ReportChecklist
Huntington Beach offers the ability to take a proactive approach with to identify and correct any possible deficiencies before a new owner or tenant is involved with a particular location, and can help eliminate unexpected costs for code corrections down the line.

Step 4:  Apply for a Business License.
The City's Municipal Code requires most businesses operating in Huntington Beach to pay an annual business license tax.  Business licenses are not transferrable between owners; however, they may be transferred to a new location with the proper notification and approval by the City.  A business license can be issued while you wait if all the needed documentation is provided during your visit.  You will find our Business License Team on the first floor of City Hall and forms and other important and helpful information on their website.

Step 5:  Business Organizations & Resources
